Camel rides at Timanfaya
Anyone who has been to Lanzarote will probably be able to tell you about the camel rides. They may not have ridden one themselves, but they may have seen them. At the very least they will have heard about them.
The camels take tourists on rides around Timanfaya, the national park with the main volcano located in it. If you have the use of a car, then it is possible to drive to their site and hire a ride locally. Most, however, will have booked a package which includes transport to the site and the ride itself.
Each camel can carry two people – seated one on either side. Once all the camels are loaded up, they stand up in a row and walk off up the mountain.
The camels used to be used on the islands for agriculture and for transport – being suited to the local lack of fresh water on the island. Today they may “only” be used by tourists, but they provide an ecologically-friendly way of seeing the centre of the national park.

HI,
What is the least expensive way to get to the park and take a camel ride.
I wil be in Lanzarote for 1 day in Dec 08.
How much is a car hire and how much is the camel ride?
Thank you
Marijean

Hii Marijean,
that does rather depend on a few different factors. You’re really on the island for just one day?
Will you be coming by plane or by sea? Most rental companies have offices at the airport, if you are coming by sea from one of the other islands you will need a company that will deliver a car to the port.
I’ve asked this site: http://tinyurl.com/26o49a for a quote for that day, based on a Ford Ka from the airport 9am to 6pm and they offered me 61,21EUR / 40.97GBP.
You should definitely book the car in advance, as booking at an office on the island will probably cost you a lot more (and take up more of your time!)
It is also worth going to your local Automobile Club if you are a member and asking them for a quote – often they have a deal with an operator on the island and may get a better price.
Alternatively ask one of the major car rental agencies in your country. Hertz offered me 67,49EUR for the same day/time/car. (via Expedia: http://tinyurl.com/2cvsyd)
There are, of course, coach tours that will take you to the camels and may also include the price of the ride, but normally you would book these at your complex or locally with an agent.
The camel rides cost 10EUR for two people (as of 2007).
Hope this helps,
Graham

Kamelreiten in Timanfaya (Lanzarote)…
Jeder der schon mal auf Lanzarote gewesen ist wird von den Kamelen erzählen können. Man muss nicht unbedingt auf ihnen geritten sein, aber man hat sie bestimmt gesehen. Oder man hat zumindest von ihnen gehört.
